“Slow down, find what moves and touches you the most in your memory, and refine their commonalities.”In the eyes of Zhu Jianping, who has been deeply engaged in real estate for decades, all these serve as the“basis”of the project and the core of urban renewal. Design begins from a connection between people and the past time, and thus incubates and activates the endogenous forces of the city.

“慢下來(lái)，找到記憶中最打動(dòng)你、觸動(dòng)你的點(diǎn)，去提煉其共性。”在深耕地產(chǎn)數(shù)十年的朱建平眼中，這一切梳理是項(xiàng)目的“依據(jù)”，是城市更新的核心所在。建立人與過(guò)去時(shí)光的連接——設(shè)計(jì)由此而始，城市的內(nèi)生力由此被醞釀、被激活。

The steps covered with moss, Huguang Club standing still over time, the to-and-fro ropeway across the river, the close connection between houses and streets… All the characteristic memories of Chongqing were properly placed in people’s vision and became the background color of “Huguang · Chongqing · China” and also the design basis of Xie Ke.

石階上長(zhǎng)滿青苔，湖廣會(huì)館靜靜地屹立著，來(lái)回穿梭的索道越過(guò)江面，房屋與街道之間緊密相連……所有重慶的特色記憶都被恰當(dāng)?shù)爻尸F(xiàn)在人們的視野中，成為“湖廣·重慶·中國(guó)”的背景色，也是謝柯的設(shè)計(jì)基礎(chǔ)。

“We used wooden structures to reinforce the wooden columns and decorate the roof with old tiles … When friends visited it after the completion of the project, they couldn’t distinguish between the old and the new, since the new members and the old buildings integrate completely and interact mutually.” Qin Zheng indicated.

謝柯表示：“我們使用木結(jié)構(gòu)加固木柱，并用舊瓦片裝飾屋頂……當(dāng)朋友們?cè)陧?xiàng)目完成后來(lái)參觀時(shí)，他們無(wú)法區(qū)分新舊，因?yàn)樾聵?gòu)件和老建筑交互融合”

02.Keeping a tree

保留一棵樹(shù)

“None of the houses were sealed off, but they form a block and are opened like stilted buildings in Chongqing which grow vertically and connect laterally”— xieke

所有房屋都沒(méi)有被封閉起來(lái)，會(huì)館設(shè)計(jì)而是形成一個(gè)街區(qū)，就像重慶的吊腳樓般開(kāi)放?？v向生長(zhǎng)并橫向連接。

As part of the “restoring the old as it was before” philosophy, the designers opened a skylight to accommodate a Ficus virens tree. This tree makes many in Chongqing homesick with its lavish branches, leaves, and umbrella-like canopy. The cafe’s name, “Canopy,” is embraced by the skylight. The “Huguang Chongqing China” project’s guiding philosophy is to respect memory and the natural world, which is reflected in the cafe’s design as well.

會(huì)館設(shè)計(jì)在“修舊如舊”的設(shè)計(jì)原則之下，設(shè)計(jì)師們開(kāi)了一個(gè)天窗，以容納一棵古老的黃桷樹(shù)。這棵樹(shù)枝葉繁茂、冠蓋如傘狀，喚醒重慶人的無(wú)數(shù)鄉(xiāng)愁。這種對(duì)記憶、對(duì)自然的尊重不僅體現(xiàn)在咖啡館的設(shè)計(jì)中，更是「中國(guó)·重慶·湖廣」項(xiàng)目奉行始終的法則。

“We tried to make sure that people can see the Yangtze River, Nanshan Mountain and the streets at every of the 75 villas, and all the old buildings have been properly protected in the area.”

“我們盡量確保75棟，每個(gè)別墅都可以看到長(zhǎng)江、南山和街道的景色，所有的老建筑都在該區(qū)域得到了妥善的保護(hù)?！?

In Xie Ke’s opinion, the street structure, which differs significantly from conventional development zones, brings back fond memories of his youth and piques his interest in taking part in it. We had little experience with real estate before to beginning this project, but Huguang Club gave us a fresh perspective.

The project gave way to history, compromised with time, and then made progress by retreating, touching designers and the public with empathy. This is similar to how the Ficus Virens tree should have been removed but still stands there. The cafe’s simple building pieces, such the bar and restrooms, break up the monotony of the ancient building and give it some life. This prevents the next upgrading of the old building from being hampered. The most “modern” elements of the entire area are now the steel gallery bridge, the big folding windows, and the skylights. Most significantly, it modernizes the historic building’s “spirit” in order to restore it.

在謝柯的眼中，這種迥異于傳統(tǒng)“開(kāi)發(fā)區(qū)”的街巷結(jié)構(gòu)喚醒了他兒時(shí)的記憶，激發(fā)了他參與其中的興趣。“在這個(gè)項(xiàng)目前，我們已很少接觸地產(chǎn)，但湖廣會(huì)館給了我們一種新的愿景?！?

會(huì)館設(shè)計(jì)就像是那棵或許本該被砍伐卻依舊鮮活的黃桷樹(shù)，項(xiàng)目讓位于歷史、妥協(xié)于時(shí)間，然后以退為進(jìn)，用共情力喚醒設(shè)計(jì)師與大眾。

咖啡館中，所有的片墻均未觸頂，盡可能不影響老建筑的下次更新；吧臺(tái)、設(shè)施等簡(jiǎn)練的體塊打破了老建筑的沉悶，為之賦予新生。簡(jiǎn)單的建筑形態(tài)，打破了古老建筑的單調(diào)性，并賦予新的生命力。這樣可以避免下一次升級(jí)舊建筑時(shí)受到阻礙。

整個(gè)區(qū)域最“現(xiàn)代”的元素是鋼結(jié)構(gòu)畫(huà)廊橋、大型折疊窗和天窗。它現(xiàn)代化了歷史建筑的“精神”成為點(diǎn)睛之筆，以當(dāng)下的方式還原了老房子的“魂”。
